Simple Vows, a poetry journal, commissioned this illustration. it documents a historic meeting of allen ginsberg, charles olson, and several other poets from the black mountain college.

in art school, i heard a lot of stories about the black mountain college. it was more like a commune than a university. to the best of my memory, it was founded sponteineously by a group of artists. the campus was a cluster of small cabins. josef albers taught color theory. robert rauschenberg and cy twombly were two of his students. like most artists, i think, i feel a little whimsy when i hear about the place. it sounds like an art historical fairy tale.

"once upon a time, outside a cabin, in the woods, josef albers lifted an autumn leaf and asked his students 'vut ees color?'"
