Many of my favorite dreams take place in an animated cartoon world. People are defined by heavy black lines. Their colors are flat but vibrant. They even smear sometimes when I touch them. Just last night, I dreamed that my apartment looked out upon a hand drawn cityscape. My neighbors were gloved animals and trippy R. Crumb bohemians. Even the scary portions were spectacularly painted. I didn't want to leave when I woke up.
Here are three frames, all self-portraits, from a cartoon that I created for my sixth grade students. It was used as the example for their animation assignment: a game of pass for which each student drew his own imaginative solution. You can see their finished film (along with my examples in motion) on YouTube, Flickr, and Illustration Friday.
