Frederic Castro

this is portrait of my future brother-in-law, Ricky. the first time i visited his parents' house, i received a proud tour of his artwork: an enormous self-portrait in their office, an interpretation of a grandfather clock in their stairwell, a magnetic contraption in their tv room, and a conceptual trophy on their mantel. his parents talk about him with a mixture of pride and amusement. he is famous in their family for his meticulous nature and his surprising thoughtfulness.

when i finally got to spend time with him in person, i was delighted by how much he reminded me of my own brother, henry. also, a gifted artist, also knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and quietly kind. (when those two met in person, they supplemented our clockwise rounds of mah-jong with a counter-clockwise celebrity word game. everyone in our families was surprised by the strange trivia to which they were both privy.)

ricky is drawn here wearing his father's sleeping gear: a neck pillow and an anti-snoring device. they make him look like a spaceman.
